Anthony Barrett

Bluffton Historical Preservation Society Executive Director

Anthony Barrett comes to the Bluffton Historical Preservation Society after having served more than thirty-seven years as a Town Manager, City Manager and County Manager in a number of communities in Virginia, North Carolina, Illinois, Florida and most recently as the Town Manager of Bluffton, South Carolina.  Mr. Barrett also worked in the private sector as a commercial development consultant for five years prior to becoming the Town Manager of Bluffton and is a Vietnam Veteran. He is a graduate of Virginia Wesleyan College with an undergraduate degree in History and Political Science. His graduate studies at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina consisted of work in American History and he is also a graduate of the University of North Carolina School of Municipal Government in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Mr. Barret became the Executive Director of the Society on May 18, 2016.

Administrative Support

Miranda was raised on Hilton Head Island, SC. She attended the College of Charleston and received a B.A. degree in both Historic Preservation and Community Planning, and Art History. She returned to Hilton Head in May of 2012 to work in the hospitality industry before coming to the Heyward House Historic Center in February of 2017 as administrative support.

Katie was raised in Charleston, SC where she fell in love with history and graduated from the College of Charleston in 2001 with a Bachelor of Science in Anthropology and a minor in History.  She continued her studies at the University of South Carolina, where she earned her Master of Arts in Anthropology in 2004.  She moved to Bluffton in 2004, where she was the Field Director and Archaeologist for a local archaeology firm.  She changed fields in 2009 and worked as a contractor at Fort Stewart in the Environmental Division where she wrote National Environmental Policy Act documents for the Army and helped conduct archaeological excavations with their Cultural Resource Management Section.  In May of 2013, she joined the staff of the Bluffton Historical Preservation Society and in March of 2015, she became the Director of the Heyward House Historic Center.

The Gift Shop at the Heyward House Historic Center is located in the modern kitchen that was added on to the Heyward House in 1930. Our gift shop holds a variety of books, gifts, and home-made items. We have unique items that would be a perfect gift for the history buff in your family.
