Take a stroll through Historic Old Town Bluffton at your own pace. Take a break to check out some of the shops or for a bite to eat. Your guide will be there all day with our Virtual Docent Walking Tour. Stop by the Heyward House first and get a tour of the historic home.Then you can pick up a set of Walking Tour Cards and go walking. When you get to one of the historic sites, just scan the card with the site’s image on it with the free Zappar app and watch the current site transform into the original site. Then your guide, Dianne Gibb, Ms. South Carolina Senior America, appears dressed in period clothing in front of the site. She will tell you all about the site before it is time for you to move on to the next one. This will require a smartphone or tablet with data.

The Heyward House Historic Center now offers a fun new tour using smartphones and tablets. Just download the free Zappar app from the Play Store on Android, or the App Store for IOS. Then, you will be able to scan select portraits throughout the historic home to make them come to life and tell you about themselves and the room they are in. Take a full tour of the house guided by the portraits.

The Heyward House is now offering other educational activities for children of all ages! Step back in time and learn how to make an Old World craft, participate in an archaeological excavation, or have an adventure around the property finding items in a history and nature scavenger hunt!

The Heyward House Historic Center offers School Days, a program that allows students to have an interactive field trip! The School Days program has several stations that are set up around the Heyward House and its grounds that allows students to learn the unique history of Bluffton and the surrounding area.

Have students pack a brown bag lunch and they can enjoy nice picnic in the park or down by the May River.

Walking tours begin with a guided tour of the Heyward House and grounds, then continue with a walk through Bluffton’s Nationally Registered Historic District.
Stroll down picturesque oak-lined streets while learning about the history, architecture, and cultural heritage of “the last true coastal village in the South.”
Guided walking tours are available Monday – Friday, and last 75 – 90 minutes. Tours are subject to weather conditions, and comfortable shoes are recommended.
Adult: $18. Student: $12.
Guided tours of the historic house-museum and grounds are available for a nominal fee. Reservations are not required for house-museum tours unless your party is 10 or more. Tours last approximately 30 to 45 minutes, and start every hour on the hour from 10 am to 4 pm.

The Heyward House is the Official Welcome Center for the Town of Bluffton. There is no charge to visit the Heyward House, where you can pick up free maps, information, local menus, and more. Prices apply only to tours.
